Easy-to-make Pindi Chole Recipe

In north India, Pindi chole is one of the classic dishes and people can never have enough of it. Unlike regular chole recipe that is usually flavored with chole masala and garam masala, Pindi chole uses the combination of Kabuli chana and chana dal and prior to cooking, it is soaked and flavored using whole spices and tea leaves tied in a cloth.

Ingredients for Pindi Chole Recipe


You essentially need the following ingredients to make Pindi chole at home.

Note: The quantity of the mentioned ingredients is for 4 serves.

· Kabuli chana – 1 cup, overnight soaked

· Chana dal – 2-3 tablespoons, washed and drained

· Tea leaves – 1 tablespoon

· Cumin seeds (jeera) – 1 tablespoon

· 1 large, finely chopped onion

· Slit green chilies – 4-5 pieces

· 2 medium-sized tomatoes, quartered

· Ginger-green chilli paste – 1 tablespoon

· Dried mango powder (amchur) – 1 tablespoon

· Chole masala – 1½ tablespoons

· Coriander (dhaniya) powder – 1 tablespoon

· Red chilli powder - 1½ tablespoons

· Garam masala powder – 1 tablespoon

· Cooking oil – 2 tablespoons

· Pomegranate seeds (anar dana) – 1 tablespoon

· Salt to taste


Pindi Chole Recipe: Preparation method


Follow the below-mentioned steps to prepare Pindi chole at home:

· Take a piece of muslin cloth and tie tea leaves to form a bundle. Transfer the overnight soaked Kabuli chana and chana dal into a pressure cooker. Add salt, tea leaves’ bundle, and around 6-8 cups of water in it. Close the lid and cook it till 6-8 whistles. Then, keep the flame low and simmer it until Kabuli chana turns soft and completely cooked. Discard the bundle of tea leaves.

· Put a non-stick pan on the gas stove. Heat oil in it and add dried pomegranate seeds and cumin seeds to sauté till they turn brown in colour.

· Add onion to the pan and sauté it turns brown in color.

· Next, add the ginger-chili paste and mix it well. Add coriander powder, red chilli powder, dried mango powder, and chole masala. Mix everything well and sauté for 2-3 minutes.

· Next, add green chilies, tomatoes, and salt to taste. Mix well and cook until tomatoes turn soft and mushy.

· Add Kabuli chana along with water and salt. Mix well and transfer into the cooker to cook it on a medium flame.

· In the end, add garam masala powder and cover it to cook until 1 whistle blows.

· Pindi chole is ready to serve.
